If you're female and the fish odor is in the region of your vagina, I would
suggest you see a gynecologist. These things usually aren't serious, but if
you want to do something about it, there are antibiotics to help.

Women's vaginas don't generally smell like what they've been eating. Perhaps
you've not only been taken in by leaky gut syndrome stories, but leaky
vagina syndrome stories, too.

Can't "trick" them?? There's nothing up my sleeve. Neither trichinella nor
bacterial vaginosis per se is going to go on to pelvic inflamatory disease,
and although they do (as irritative forces) seem to predispose to passage of
HIV in Africa, if you don't have the HIV exposure, they're harmless.
Nevertheless, if you treat both partners they do go away, and you can eat
all the fish you like after that, and nothing will happen, so they have
nothing to do with diet.

Of course, with multiple sex partners you're soon going to be in the same
fix. Blind men at the docks have a terrible time at the fish counters ("Hey
ladies, hows the action?"). Truthfully I once had an infectious disease
expert tell me that bacterial vaginosis was more of a cosmetic than a
medical problem, and needn't be treated. (He happened to be male). And in
some cultures and with some people, I'm sure it's true. You can actually
smear your bottom with fermented carp paste, for all I care.  In the US,
however, I predict you'll have more success with butter-pecan.

Yep. If it smells like fish, treat with metronidazole/flagyl.  You'll find
it's not a fact of nature.

COMMENT:

Yep, it's infection. Not necessarily an STD, but usually so
(particularly in younger women). And there are multiple implicated
bugs, some of them known (trichomonas), and some of them still debated.
But they all produce amines, which is what smells "fishy" (salt water
fish produce trimethylamine oxide as an osmotic agent), and the
infections almost always respond to Flagyl/metronidazole.  Usually both
partners need to be treated. If a woman has multiple partners, she has
to get rid of the amores to get rid of the amines. Congugate that ;)
Nobody can stay on metronidazole forever, as it messes with your
peripheral nerves.

I was once at a continuing med education session on STDs and heard a
(male) expert say that a fishy vulva was more of a "cosmetic" than a
"medical" problem. I heard it! I did eye-rolling like Susan Sarandon
and heard some faint suppressed groans behind me. But was sitting up
front and didn't have the guts to turn around to see who was making
them. Too bad. Cowardice. And so now I cannot report.

And since we've arrived at politics, now for a politically-incorrect
comment. Avert your eyes, all ye who cannot take such things. Stop
reading here.  Don't blame me for what comes next, if you don't. STOP.

If a woman with a fishy vulva is a leftist CANADIAN, and the problem is
indeed merely "cosmetic," the academic question for today is this: is
metronidazole something she medically NEEDS, or something she merely
WANTS?  I hear she'll actually be paying more for generic metronidazole
than in the US (though in truth it's cheap).  But if it's not a medical
necessity, SHOULD society pay for it?  I believe there should be
massive Provincial referrenda to determine this important democratic
issue, immediately!

The only spot of cheer here is that metronidazole has long gone off
patent, so there won't be any TV commercials urging its use for this
cosmetic problem. And you thought the $8 buck a pill Lamasil TOENAIL
infection commercials were bad (Do Canadians get Lamasil??).  Think
what the little wee beasties in a **Flagyl** commercial would be doing.
